But yeah, basketball is so good right now, though. I know you’re not supposed to read the comments, but reading the comments on ESPN’s NBA stories the night a series ends is like a glimpse into the fevered ravings of a madman. I saw multiple people saying things like “OKC is going to get Chris Paul next year and be unstoppable” or “Durant to the Heat, we’ll go 82-0,” like real life is suddenly 2K13 on the easiest difficulty or whatever. In small doses it’s pretty outstanding.

It’s hard to justify why I’d rather watch soccer than the NBA playoffs when I hear about Huddersfield and Barnsley literally not playing the last two minutes of their match, then both sets of fans storming the pitch at full time to celebrate a 1-1 draw that ensures they both stay in the Championship next season

When talking about soccer, we all have a tendency to get a bit overwhelmed by transfer budgets, sponsorship contracts and wage allowances. The modern game is one dominated by a never-ending news cycle that’s difficult to avoid; one in which is cynicism has a certain inevitability. But while FIFA officials and fascist fans conspire to drag us down, soccer remains a children’s game; a fact that was made clear in Portland this afternoon.

Teaming up with the Make-A-Wish foundation, the Portland Timbers gave 8-year old Atticus Lane-Dupre, who was diagnosed with Cancer last fall, a moment in the spotlight. Alongside teammates from his local youth soccer side, the Green Machine, Atticus was invited to Jeld-Wen Field for a scrimmage in front of more than 3,000 fans against a group of select players from the Timbers starting eleven.

Backed by flares, signs and a variety of G-rated chants, the Green Machine took down the Timbers 9-8, with four goals coming by way of Atticus himself. Don’t let the television coverage or blogs fool you: the heart of soccer emanated from the Pacific Northwest today.

Today I finally got my druthers enough to drive out to Golden and ride up Lookout Mountain. Here is what that looked like:

A fine ride. Nice to get up into the Front Range a little, just to see if I could (I don’t know if this actually counts as “the Front Range” or not). Going down the mountain is more terrifying than going up it, really, especially on some of the switchbacks when I’m not real sure how fast the cars behind me are going (though there were more bikes than cars on the road). I don’t know if I could do this climb if I didn’t drive my car to the bottom of it, but maybe I’ll just park my car progressively further away from the entrance to the park and that will be how I build up my endurance.

The Buffalo Bill Grave and Museum is at the top, and they claimed to have “Rowdy Root Beer Floats,” which normally I’d be all about, but it was like 45 degrees up there so it seemed too cold for one. Maybe over the summer. I settled for an IPA at Golden City Brewery instead.

Today we rode out to Red Rocks and back. Here is what that looked like:

I didn’t really feel that big climb (I mean, apart from it always being a little breathtaking to have to climb 600 feet) until we got on the other side of 470 and my knee started to yell at me, but then I just got in the low gears and stayed there the rest of the trip. This was fun! We took a couple of wrong turns that aren’t on the map, and the Bear Creek trail had some detours that were annoying, but other than that I highly recommend riding to Red Rocks to all of my friends who like riding bikes up to 6500 feet.

That’s all I have. I’ll post some pictures eventually. I wonder what riding in Chicago this summer will be like after four months here.
