There’s a poster in the staff lounge right now from the local chapter of PAWS that has “FIVE DOLLAR FELINES” written on it in big block letters, and there’s no way they’re not referencing that Subway commercial, and it makes me a little uncomfortable when I see it because I don’t want those two things connected in my head at all

here's how this is going to go
There are exactly as many promotion and tenure review committees as there are kinds of beer made at the Rochefort Brewery. And so, if I pass the first-level library committee, I am going to Zeno’s and I will have a Rochefort 6. If I pass second-level and the dean signs off on me getting tenure, I am going to Zeno’s and I will have a Rochefort 8. And if I get the letter from Old Main...

Chris Sale strikes out career-high 15 to key... →
This quote made me feel old: “A special day … it was awesome,” said Sale, who is from nearby Lakeland. “It’s nice, especially growing up and being kind of a Tampa Bay Rays fan. My uncle brought me here to the first game. It was the day after my birthday.” I’m not really ready for baseball players who are young enough that they grew up as Tampa Bay...

Here are some funny search terms that have led people to my website: fuck your birthday gif the most disastrous nuclear gadget in the world a variety of searches involving Skrillex that lead to me because of this (also that page is, by far, the top referrer to jackflaps.net, which is hilarious) Also a bunch of people land on it looking specifically for a chapter I wrote in this one book, which...

Men’s Hockey Schedule Revealed →
I’m a bit sad there isn’t a more marquee home opponent next season than Air Force, but I guess you have to start somewhere, and also I guess no Big Ten team wants to slum it in Greenberg when there’s a big shiny new arena coming in a year.

cic libraries conference: tuesday project reports
For this they invited faculty from throughout the Big Ten working on geospatial projects in different disciplines to talk about their work, its context, the kinds of services libraries are providing to them now, and what we could be doing in the future to assist these projects. This went for two hours, and so you’re going to have to keep reading after the jump because this post is very...

cic libraries conference: tuesday keynote
Tom Fisher, dean of the College of Design at the University of Minnesota, keynoted this morning. His talk hopped around from philosophy to information science to his own field of architecture, but was essentially about how new media change the roles of institutions that support the old media. He focused on geospatial resources (since that’s what this meeting is about) and the spatial turn as...

#musicdiaryproject day 4
I listened to the Allo Darlin’ record again. It’s the best indie pop record to come out in a while, for me. A lot of records in this vein have unremarkable or actively, offensively bad lyrics, but I like what Elizabeth Morris sings about. I’m just about tired of it, though, after listening to little else the last few days. I’ll probably be done with it for a bit, I...

my secret
I’ve actually always liked Andre Iguodala just because he’s from Springfield. Everyone always shits on downstate Illinois because it’s not the city, so whenever one of us makes good at something I’m a fan. It’s too bad they’re going to get lit up by the Celtics in the next round, but.

What I’ve had on so far today: allo darlin’, europe atmosphere, “godlovesugly”→”a song about a friend” brother ali, the undisputed truth I’m going to the Twin Cities next week for work and to win bar trivia with my Carleton quiz bowl friends, so that’s what this is. #musicdiaryproject day 1
I’ve decided to do this. I didn’t actually end up listening to very much music this afternoon, though; I got into doing a bunch of XML editing and learning how Google Refine works and forgot to put anything on. Oh well. Here was my day: beastie boys, “sabotage”→”sure shot”→”shadrach” gorillaz, the singles collection 2001-2011 (carry-over from...

a note from jason
magnoliaelectricco: Dear friends and family. It has been a long hospital year. You all have done so much and given so much to further my cause on this planet that I feel compelled to give you a little note. The response towards my medical fund and other support has been better than I could have ever imagined. I spent my time on the farm which was more like the opposite of a tour of duty, but it...

This is a pretty sweet burn he gets in on Toronto’s manager: Does he think this team is coached wrong? “It’s not for me to say that.” Maybe it is. “Hey, you know what they say about the stone the builder refused.” No, what do they say? “Look it up.” I did. It’s Psalm 118:22: “The stone the builders rejected has become the capstone.” Anyway, I look forward to posting “brb,...

The thing about XSLT is that even if you solve whatever problem you had that required it, you’re still going to feel pretty dumb, because there’s no way that was the easiest solution to your problem. Surely there’s something in XPath that’s more elegant. There isn’t, though! You’re totally good at this!
